The Museum of Peasant Farming Culture has been housed since 1973 in Villa Smeraldi and managed by the Province of Bologna, which in 1999, established the Villa Smeraldi Institution with support from the municipal administrations of Bentivoglio, Bologna and Castel Maggiore.
In 2015 Metropolitan City of Bologna took over from the Province of Bologna.
