Personal hygiene

The farmer’s house did not contain a bathroom. Bedrooms were equipped with an iron structure with a washbowl and pitcher of well water for everyday washing. Women would bathe in the kitchen, close to the hearth; men would wash outside, or - in the summer months - in hemp pools and canals. For bodily needs, the family would use a latrine behind the stables, close to the pigpen.

A urinal was kept under the bed or in the bedside table for nighttime use. A chamber pot could only be found in the bedrooms of the elderly. This was a special chair with a circular hole and straw-filled, doughnut-shaped seat (brazadèla dal còmod) with a ceramic or metal bowl (buiól) positioned on a shelf underneath.
